What we tell you before day one

The briefing matters more than the itinerary

We don't hand you a printed schedule and walk off. Every trip starts with an actual conversation — what the ground will feel like underfoot, where the hard stretches sit in the day, what the weather's likely to do that week and what we'll do if it doesn't cooperate.

We'd rather you know too much before day one than be surprised on day two. Surprises on the ground cost more than five extra minutes of conversation at the start.

Honesty about fitness beats confidence about experience

We ask you to be honest about your pace, not impressive about your resume. Someone who paces themselves through day one almost always does better than someone who sprints the first hour and struggles by noon. That's the only thing we're really trying to learn in the briefing — not what you've done before, but how you'll actually move.

What happens if something doesn't go to plan

Part of the briefing is talking through what we do if someone needs to turn back, if weather forces a reroute, or if the pace needs to shift for the group to stay together. We'd rather you hear that plan calmly before it's needed than have to explain it under pressure. Most groups never need it — but everyone leaves the briefing knowing what happens if they do
